We need to allow children to be bored. When kids claim they’re bored, we often respond by suggesting they watch TV. But by doing this, we rob them of the opportunity to use their imagination and creativity.
Today, I picked up my granddaughter from school. After a busy day, she finished at 14:00 following her extracurricular activities. We went for a treat and then headed home to tackle homework. Today was a no-screen time day, and she wanted to play word games. At just seven years old she loves playing hangman. For her upcoming Friday spelling test, she needed to learn ten words – numbers one to ten. We decided to integrate these words into our hangman game. It was a fantastic way for her to learn her spelling. Of course, we also enjoyed a few rounds of the classic game, noughts and crosses. She spent some time reading on her own as well.
She gets to sleep over, and I cherish the time spent together. She gets to read me a story, and I read her one in return. I’ve learned to bank my work and if she’s not watching the screen, neither am I. Because we have made her learning fun, while driving her to school, she asks if we could play a word game using her spelling words. These moments spent together create memories she will always remember.
Parents, allow your children to be bored so they can use their imagination and think out the box. Let them play and learn, as they have so much to teach us adults.
